Clear Astern

A boat is clear astern when she's entirely behind a line square across the stern of the boat ahead.

on the same tack and not overlapped, the boat catching up from behind has to keep clear (rule 12).

Two boats on starboard tack sailing upwind, close-hauled, one behind the other, with the wind blowing from the top of the frame. The red boat ahead is labeled AHEAD in green. A yellow dashed line runs square across its stern, and the blue boat behind, labeled CLEAR ASTERN in amber, is entirely behind that line.
